Bhangra - the Hip Hop of India

Bhangra is a harvest dance from Punjab, India. Many of the movements mimic farming activities, such as sowing and reaping. Traditionally danced by men only, Bhangra has metamorphosed as a second generation South Asian popular dance style for both men and women. The traditional percussion instruments, such as the dhol (a large two-headed drum played with sticks), lend themselves to easy fusion with other kinds of music. Britain and America have fused the style with other kinds of music and dance, such as hip hop and electronica. Because of its popularity and the mélange of music styles it encompasses, Bhangra has been called the hip-hop of India.
Benefits: Bhangra dance is full of life and energy! The way Joti teaches not only offers a great cardio workout, but students will also learn choreography and how to transition between steps. The class will increase coordination and sense of rhythm. In addition, the performance at the end of the session will provide students with a concrete goal while they learn the dance.
